Guest Feature: Khoi Vinh

Posted by Jesse Herlitz on Oct 29, 2019

This week we're featuring a selection of podcasts from Khoi Vinh. Khoi is a long standing pillar of the design community, a Principal Designer at Adobe, and currently runs the design podcast Wireframe.

Here's Khoi:

All my life I’ve been a visual person, which is why I ended up in design, but I fell under the spell of podcasts almost as soon as they became a thing in the 2000s. It’s a format that’s perfect for New Yorkers because we pretty much walk or ride the subway everywhere, so there’s lots of listening time. So when I somehow fell into hosting a podcast all about design, that was such a wonderful convergence of two of my passions.

Wireframe

So, modesty aside, I just think Wireframe is the best design podcast out there because we work so hard to tell deeply researched, highly produced stories about why design matters. All kinds of people, not just designers, tell me they find it surprisingly absorbing. It’s been one of the funnest things I’ve done in my career.

/Filmcast (Slashfilmcast)

Slashfilmcast

I’m a big movie nut and subscribe to a lot of film-related podcasts, but The Slashfilmcast is one that, when a new episode is released, I almost always pause whatever else I may be listening to in order to listen to it. The hosts strike a terrific balance between criticism, news and friendly banter.

You Must Remember This

You Must Remember This

Karina Longworthy’s You Must Remember This is also about film, ostensibly, but it’s really a fantastic podcast all about history. She goes really deep into stories of old Hollywood, but to do that, she basically tells the story of the 20th Century. Her series on Charles Manson’s horrific time in Hollywood is the perfect companion to Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood,” by the way.

Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend

Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend

Conan O’Brien really surprised me when he launched his Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast last year. The premise is he chats with celebrities and asks them why they’re not friends in real life, but that’s just an excuse for extremely incisive interviews laced with hilarity. It’s the only podcast where I listen to the ad spots every time, because they’re often just as funny as the show.

Story Pirates

Story Pirates

Story Pirates is supposed to be a kids’ podcast where they translate story ideas submitted by young listeners into funny sketch comedy and songs. But it’s so incredibly well done that I’m pretty sure I enjoy it even more than my kids do. Plus, this season, my daughter had one of her ideas accepted and so hopefully one of these days, we’ll hear it on an episode. I guess podcasting kind of runs in the family.

Big thanks to Khoi for sharing his favorite podcasts with us. Be sure to check out Wireframe on the app all the cool kids are using.
